3 · Smell and squeeze
For this one, your nose beats the camera. A sour or ammonia smell means not ready, however good the photo looks.
Squeeze a handful of compost, then open your palm.
Our SOP says two to three times a week. More than four days is already late — air stops getting in and the process stalls.

Seed germination test
The final check — free, needs no equipment, and makes a good science activity for the children. Soak compost in water, wet cotton wool with that water, sow 10 mustard seeds. Count after four days.
It passes if 80% or more sprout — 8 out of 10.
